INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Cayden Lindahl finished his career last weekend by breaking a Richmond High School record at the IHSAA Boy’s State Finals.
He set the record for the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.5 seconds, which was good enough to finish 21st in the state.
For Lindahl, it was the culmination of years of hard work.
“Sophomore year I realized that the 100 fly record set back in 95 was very possible to achieve and ever since then it was one of my main goals before high school ended,” Lindahl said.
The record had stood since 1995.
It was Lindahl's second state final appearance.
“Competing at state a second time was much better than the first time,” he said. “The first time was a trial run. I didn’t have any teammates so it was hard to stay focused and motivated.”
In his junior year, Lindahl was the only representative of Richmond at the finals. Senior year Lindahl competed alongside other teammates.
Sophomores Owen Fowler, Masson Heiny, Greyson Farmer, along with Lindahl competed on a relay team at the State Finals.
“Having my teammate with me was awesome,” Lindahl said. “Getting to share the state experience with them at such a young age was very beneficial for them and lit a fire leading into next season.”
